Where Do We Go From Here? brings these questions to Weeksville Heritage Center for a community conversation on climate justice\, animal rights\, and ecofeminism in Brooklyn. \n\n\n\nKwolanne Felix\, Haley Duren\, and Vanessa Sanchez join moderator Noella Williams to share their advocacy for environmental justice across food\, education\, and community organizing. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP\n\n\n\n\nMeet Our Speakers\n\n\n\nVanessa Sanchez \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVanessa is a Brooklyn-based community educator and plant-based chef whose work explores the intersection of food systems\, behavioral changes\, and the craft of consumption. With a background in psychology and a career rooted in public health advocacy. Her practice moves beyond recipes\, focusing instead on food as a universal language for storytelling and systemic awareness.As the founder of Alegría Vegana\, she curates events that focus on community building. Currently a lead educator within the NYC public health sector\, Vanessa is dedicated to creating grounded\, inclusive spaces where the act of the meal becomes a participatory art form. She is a bilingual facilitator committed to making food consciousness an accessible\, creative\, and transformative community experience. \n\n\n\nHaley Duren \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHaley Duren is a plant-based Executive Chef based in the East Village. After going vegan almost 8 years ago\, her love for sustainable food systems has shaped her career into one which is driven by deep passion\, genuine excitement\, and love for both the world and everyone who shares it. As the former Executive Chef of Cadence\, a beloved plant-based Southern restaurant\, Chef Haley continues to make her mark in the New York City dining scene. With her current restaurant\, Long Count\, Duren connects with local farms around New York\, New Jersey and Pennsylvania to create hyper seasonal\, plant-forward menus. Awarded Time Out Magazine’s Best Young Chef’s in NYC of 2025\, Duren shapes her philosophy behind plant-based cuisine being just as notable as traditional culinary paths. Haley’s mission is to close food insecurity gaps with community outreach and initiatives including local food drives\, bake sales & pop ups\, and starting an after school program for high schoolers to teach them about healthy eating habits. Chef Haley is one of the faces of the new generation of the hospitality industry\, one led with compassion for others and the world alike. \n\n\n\nKwolanne Felix \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKwolanne Felix is a NYC-based writer\, historian\, and gender and climate scholar. Kwolanne is pursuing a PhD in U.S. and environmental history at New York University and works as the Fellowship Manager at Black Girl Environmentalist where she runs an exciting programs empowering women and gender-expansive folks in the climate sector. She writes articles\, essays\, and opinion pieces about climate change\, politics\, gender\, and American history\, and has been featured in Truthout and Ms. Magazine. \n\n\n\nNoella Williams (Moderator) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNoella Williams is a Brooklyn-based writer covering Black culture\, queer identity\, fandoms\, music\, and veganism through journalism\, community organizing\, and music. Exploring the intersection of race\, class\, pop culture\, and gender through a chronically-online lens\, her work can be found in publications like Teen Vogue\, Vox\, and UPROXX or comic conventions like New York Comic Con. She’s currently writing her debut book\, Misogynoir and Multiverses: A Black Girl’s Guide to Fandom Culture\, and organizing the nationwide feminist college tour for Lux Magazine. SUMMARY:Watch Night: To Linger in the Ordinary
DESCRIPTION:Weeksville Heritage Center\, in partnership with Rada Collaborative\, presents To Linger in the Ordinary\, a film program curated by Gervais Marsh\, Rada’s 2026 Criticism and Curatorial Fellow.Location: Weeksville Heritage Center\, 158 Buffalo Avenue\, Crown Heights\, BrooklynAdmission: Free and open to the public \n\n\n\nConsider the expanse\, tensions\, and intimacies of ordinary life. Life lived beyond the moments it is framed as spectacular\, both in its beauty and its violence. Meaning is made through the exhale and the simple actions of daily life. The entirety of any life\, the fullness of Black life\, cannot be captured. \n\n\n\nArchitectures of exceeding harm are carved into the landscape\, ingrained in the everyday. Anti-Black realities necessitate a constant negotiation of both the mundane and extravagant scales of injury. Amidst these constraints\, the ordinary conjures the complexities of Black life. \n\n\n\nThe film program thinks alongside scholar Christina Sharpe’s Ordinary Notes\, which asks us to consider how Black people are known to themselves and to each other beyond the terms of violence and vulnerability. Sharpe writes: \n\n\n\n\n“[We\, Black people\,] are constituted through and by continued vulnerability to overwhelming force though not only known to ourselves and to each other by that force. That other knowing\, that other note\, is one that we might call regard.“ \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThrough short films by Kevin Jerome Everson\, Kahlil I. An Associate Curator at Creative Time\, they are guided by a desire to foster emotional resonances through public art and programming\, exhibition making\, and essays\, while thinking alongside artists across all mediums. With a grounding in Black Feminism\, they believe that knowledge is created collectively\, and lean into the vulnerability of uncertainty\, recognizing that not everything can be known. They received a PhD in Performance Studies from Northwestern University\, and are an alumna of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. \n\n\n\nsadé powell — Performer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nsadé powell is a Staten Island-based concrete poet whose work explores black vernacularity\, orthographic disruption\, witnessing\, and the poetics of concealment. Working with a 1930s Royal typewriter\, her poems often extend beyond the page. She is the author of dontbeabitterbtch (Selva Oscura Press)\, wordtomydead (Ugly Duckling Presse)\, periodluv (Belladonna*)\, and the forthcoming collection goodmuddy (Ugly Duckling Presse). \n\n\n\nRada Collaborative\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRada Collaborative is a self-sustaining network of BIPOC artists\, founded by filmmakers Michèle Stephenson and Joe Brewster\, that uses cinema\, visual art\, and compelling visual storytelling to build narrative agency for creators of color. She is the author of The Book of Juju: Africana Spirituality for Healing\, Liberation\, and Self-Discovery\, a work of creative nonfiction that combines memoir\, history\, and guided prompts to help readers strengthen their ancestral spiritual practice. She is the founder of Juju Bae\, a multimedia Black-centric resource that seeks to demystify traditional spirituality through storytelling and lighthearted conversations with twenty-first-century relevance. She is the host of the award-winning show A Little Juju podcast\, which encourages people of the Diaspora to find a home in Africana spiritual spaces and thought. She starred in the 2023 Hulu paranormal docuseries Living for the Dead\, produced by Kristen Stewart. Juju is a sought-after spiritual teacher and holds a BA in Psychology from Spelman College. \n\n\n\nSHAN Wallace \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHAN Wallace (b. 1991) is a nomadic\, award-winning interdisciplinary artist\, archivist\, and image-maker from Baltimore\, MD. Her practice is rooted in a wide range of image-making techniques. Wallace investigates how images shift\, degrade\, and transform as they move between mediums. Her work is held in both public and private collections across the U.S.\, including The Baltimore Museum of Art\, The Mint Museum\, The Whitney Museum\, and Johns Hopkins University\, as well as various private collections. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. We invite neighbors to co-create a living tapestry as an invitation to the community to explore and celebrate how we connect to the natural world\, to the plant food all around us\, to Crown Heights\, and to our more-than-human neighbors. We will invite participants to create their own quilt squares in any way that calls to them\, be it through embroidery\, applique\, hand stitching\, or drawing. The squares will then be added to our ever-growing tapestry built by many hands. In this workshop\, you will explore the culturally rich tradition of quilting\, pick up sewing skills\, and learn about local ecology. Through a collaborative design activity using real sites within Historic Weeksville\, participants will explore how land can be cared for as kin\, not commodity.  \n\n\n\n3:30pm—Natural Dying workshop with Tajah (outofseam_) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTajah (outofseam_) will introduce us to the transformative nature of fresh and dried plants onto silk fabric. We will engage various chemical elements that will be released as it adheres to material through heat and pH\, making them into wearable art. This is a hands-on\, interactive workshop with all materials provided. Each supporter will have their own scarf as an artifact of their natural dye journey.    \n\n\n\nBio-designer and material artist Tajah Ellis focuses on the growth and decay cycles of Earth matter into a vibrant range of color\, texture and patterns. Her craft takes the shape of fiber de-construction\, emphasizing the stress endured during the beautification processes\, interpreted through the artisanship of living material onto garments and tapestries.   \n\n\n\nSounds by—Ella Hussle \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElla Hussle is a dynamic DJ\, producer\, and event curator originally from \n\n\n\nLas Vegas and now based in Brooklyn. Her musical journey began in 2015\, and she’s quickly become known for her high-energy sets and sultry\, diverse sound. SUMMARY:The Power of the Story: Neighbors Share How Brooklyn Fought Deed Theft
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a powerful night centered on community\, storytelling\, and home. Gathering on the historic grounds of the nation’s second-largest free Black community before the civil war\, we will gather together to consider what it means to carry on the legacy of Black belonging in Brooklyn today.  \n\n\n\nBegin the night with a free tour of the Historic Hunterfly Road Houses (5:30 pm) to learn more about the inspiring history of Black homeownership and placemaking in Central Brooklyn. Then\, gather with us at 6pm to hear directly from advocates and community members who are directly impacted by deed theft. Through their stories\, learn more about the troubling rise of deed theft and about the tools we have as a community to fight it.   \n\n\n\nAccompanying this event\, Weeksville invites you to continue the conversation by sharing your own stories of deed theft with us. Throughout the event\, sign-ups will be available to participate in an oral history project\, capturing the stories and experiences of our neighbors impacted by deed theft.  \n\n\n\nIf you are interested in sharing your personal account for the Weeksville Heritage Center archive\, please register via the oral history sign up sheet\, linked here. Or\, sign up in person Thursday evening during the event. Participating in the oral history project is completely optional and will take place at a later date. Now\, five years old\, the show boasts a community of listeners that tune in weekly to hear her discoveries\, for a sonic range that spans ambient\, spoken word\, spiritual jazz\, soul\, alternative R&B\, and more. \n\n\n\nIn 2024\, summer school radio expanded to in-person deep listening sessions\, with Lovie’s curation joined by guests such as Alex Rita (Calm Roots)\, Laraaj\, Surya Botofasina\, and more. \n\n\n\nJADALAREIGN (Love From The Sun) — As a selector and an events programmer\, Jada’s staunch effort to preserve the origins of Black American dance music has made her synonymous with the city’s emergent house renaissance. Her expansive mixes are suffused in an indefinable funk\, rifling through house history\, disco and techno—punchier sounds occasionally softened by hazy soul and sumptuous jazz. \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, she started Love From The Sun: an Afro-modernist community initiative devoted to preserving and celebrating the legacies of Black American music and culture as living forces for survival\, healing\, and liberation. We honor the sounds\, stories\, and innovations that have shaped generations\, treating music not only as expression\, but as a tool for collective memory and future-making. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP

DESCRIPTION:Join Weeksville Heritage Center\, Creative Urban Alchemy\, and the Beam Center to unveil Osisi Obodo\, a new modular shade and gathering structure\, on Thursday\, June 25. \n\n\n\nWeeksville Heritage Center\, Creative Urban Alchemy\, and the Beam Center will unveil Osisi Obodo\, a new modular shade and gathering structure on the historic grounds. The project responds to the lack of tree coverage and green space in Northern Crown Heights\, where urban density and heat create real climate risk for residents. The structure was built by youth from the Kingsborough NYCHA Houses community\, who received carpentry mentorship and compensation through workshops held January through May 2026. With the unveiling\, Weeksville expands its role as an official New York City cooling site and adds a permanent outdoor space for programming\, gathering\, and community life. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:Black & Free: Pleasure Histories
DESCRIPTION:On June 4\, Black & Free: Pleasure Histories comes to Weeksville Heritage Center for an evening of film and live performance honoring Black queer and trans legacies of pleasure that are too often excluded from dominant narratives. \n\n\n\nAs one of the nation’s earliest free Black communities\, Weeksville offers a space to reflect on the present through histories of self-determination. Through moving image\, storytelling\, and burlesque\, the evening highlights those who expanded the boundaries of gender\, sexuality\, and embodiment in New York and beyond. \n\n\n\nThe program features a screening of Mary of Ill Fame (2020–21) by Tourmaline\, a fictional narrative grounded in the life of Mary Jones\, a Black trans woman and sex worker in 1830s New York. The screening is paired with excerpts from We Been Here\, a showcase honoring Black burlesque legends Sahji (1940s) and Jean Idelle (1950s–60s)\, alongside live performances by two of New York’s leading Black burlesque artists\, Queerly Femmetastic and Aurora Boobrealis. \n\n\n\nThis event was curated by Kirya Traber\, and produced by Kelly Greenlight. \n\n\n\nFilm and Performance Series Descriptions \n\n\n\nMary of Ill Fame (2020–2021) shapes a fictional story around Mary Jones (played by Rowin Amone)\, a Black trans woman and sex worker who was part of a community of “girls of ill fame” and eventually incarcerated in the 1830s for stealing a man’s wallet. Mary of Ill Fame imagines Jones in Seneca Village\, an autonomous New York City community of free Black and Irish immigrants located on the land occupied today by Central Park. Splicing between images of Jones in brutal confinement and in a gracious\, picturesque Seneca Village home\, Tourmaline builds a fantasy space of power\, freedom\, and pleasure that the actual Jones deserved.  \n\n\n\nRuntime: 17min 14sec \n\n\n\nWe Been Here:  \n\n\n\nHot-cha girls. Strip tease darlings. Exotic dancers. Shake dancers. Hoochie coochie girls. Black women have always been a part of the building and rebuilding of burlesque in America\, but are often left out of the history books. Our unique way of storytelling through movement\, costuming\, props\, and performance is an integral part of the legacy of classic burlesque in the 30s\, 40s\, and 50s as well as the revival of the art form through neo-burlesque in the 90s. Central to her existence is the fact that Aurora cannot and will not separate herself from her art\, race\, or political beliefs. She is a co-founder of Boombox Burlesque: A Hip Hop Burlesque Festival\, brASS: Brown RadicalAss Burlesque\, and back in 2007\, Brown Girls Burlesque. Aurora has graced burlesque stages across the country from NYC to Seattle\, Portland\, Austin\, Boston\, Minneapolis\, Philly\, D.C. and more! She is a multiple Silver Tusk award winner\, Board President of BurlyCon\, mom to a brilliant kid\, and an aspiring Beatboxer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by Sam GreggA Guggenheim Fellow and TIME100 Honoree\, Tourmaline is an artist\, filmmaker\, and writer. Tourmaline’s history-making book MARSHA (May 2025) is the first definitive biography of the revolutionary Black trans activist Marsha P. Johnson. Her award-winning films — including the critically acclaimed Happy Birthday\, Marsha! — have been widely recognized for their unique blend of historical narrative and speculative futurism. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of Peace in Destruction: Art from Rikers Island\, presented by Groundswell at Weeksville Heritage Center. \n\n\n\nBetween 2008 and 2019\, Groundswell created murals at Rikers Island alongside young people impacted by the carceral system. Few of these works have ever been seen outside those walls. This exhibition preserves the visual records and social histories of these murals while centering the lived experiences\, emotions\, and imaginations of young people impacted by incarceration. \n\n\n\nThe opening reception is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Martha Redbone: Freedom is in the Songs
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: Cedic Pilard \n\n\n\nMartha\, vocalist/songwriter/composer and United States Artist fellow\, known for her unique gumbo of folk\, blues\, and gospel\, has developed her own singular style of American Roots music that is a direct reflection of her Southeastern Afro-Indigenous culture and heritage; the Appalachian hills of Harlan County\, Kentucky; and the eclectic grit of pre-gentrified Brooklyn.   \n\n\n\nFor her Spring concert performance at Weeksville Heritage Center\, musician and storyteller Martha Redbone and her ensemble invite the audience to sing along while they perform music spanning the Black American music diaspora\, weaving in her own American story through music that celebrates Black and Indigenous shared histories.  Inspired by Weeksville’s community newspaper\, Freedman’s Torchlight\, dating back to 1866\, Martha will compose two new songs based on the text as part of her Weeksville performance honoring the history and legacy in song\, as one of the oldest Black settlements in New York and the United States. Among the exhibitions she has curated are The Battle of Brooklyn: Fought and Remembered\, Trace/s: Family History Research and the Legacy of Slavery in Brooklyn\, and a pop-up exhibition\, Memories Matter\, in the Euclid Avenue subway station as a collaboration with the MTA’s Vacant Unit Activation Program. She received her Ph.D in US History from New York University\, with her doctoral research focusing on race\, ethnicity\, and immigration in post-Civil Rights Era Brooklyn schools. Dominique regularly writes and lectures on Blackness in America\, schools and education\, and New York City history. \n\n\n\nOleana Whispering Dove\, Keeper of Cultural Lifeways\, has worked as a museum professional for over 20 years and now curates’ Native American programs\, spotlighting Traditional Contemporary Indigenous artists. Likewise\, Oleana is Smithsonian Museum trained in Lenape Indigenous history and fulfills public speaking engagements on the topics of Carving Out a Legacy and Historic Native American Women Chiefs\, which reflect her Indigenous heritage as a Native American descendant. \n\n\n\nAbout Martha Redbone \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Christine Jean Chambers \n\n\n\nMartha Redbone is an American vocalist\, songwriter\, composer\, educator\, and United States Artist Fellow\, celebrated for her “brilliant collision of cultures” (The New Yorker)\, embodying the folk and mountain blues sounds of her childhood in “Coal country” Harlan County\, Kentucky with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn. Inheriting her powerful gospel-singing father’s voice and the resilient spirit of her mother’s Southeastern Indigenous and African American culture\, Martha broadens the boundaries of American Roots music. Songs and storytelling share her life experience as an Afro-Indigenous mother in an ever-changing world. Working in partnership with longtime collaborator Aaron Whitby\, their works include Original Music and Score for the 2022 Broadway revival “for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuff\, Ntozake Shange and 2020 Drama Desk Award- Outstanding Composer in a Play\, Public Theater\, NYC. SUMMARY:Gathering The Folk: A Celebration of Zora Neale Hurston
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Women’s History Month community event and an interactive day of celebration! Honoring the legacy of Zora Neale Hurston\, the groundbreaking writer of Their Eyes Were Watching God\, cultural anthropologist\, folklorist\, playwright\, and choreographer. \n\n\n\nLed by Tanya Birl-Torres of ‘The Zora Project’ (Social Practice Artist-in-Residence at The Shed and Broadway Movement Director & Choreographer) and in collaboration with Anya Andrews (multi-disciplinary artist and educator)\, this family-friendly event brings Hurston’s legacy to life through storytelling\, movement\, and community connection. \n\n\n\nWhat to Expect \n\n\n\nWe will gather\, break bread and listen to some of Hurston’s collected folktales\, learn how they work\, and craft our own modern day stories. As Zora said\, folktales are the “boiled down juice of human living”—everyday wisdom passed down through generations. \n\n\n\nWe will also experience the reimagined choreography of the Buzzard Lope and Crow Dance\, powerful movement pieces adapted from Hurston’s lost choreographic works and ‘Their Eyes Were Watching God’. Together we will discover how Zora studied and participated in ritualized dance to preserve Black cultural traditions. \n\n\n\nThis event is free for the entire family! Come and gather with us! No experience necessary\, just a curiosity and willingness to connect. \n\n\n\nAbout the Facilitators \n\n\n\nTanya Birl-Torres  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTanya Birl-Torres is a New York City–based creative director\, choreographer\, movement director\, systems change facilitator\, and mother. Her work spans major theaters including The Public Theater and Oregon Shakespeare Festival\, and she has performed on Broadway in The Lion King and Memphis. Through her company SoHumanity\, she brings embodied\, liberatory practices into social innovation and education\, co-teaching at Columbia University’s Teachers College. A MAP Fund grantee and Artistic Director of the Washington Heights Womanist Arts Festival\, Tanya is the 2026 Social Practice Artist-in-Residence at The Shed\, where she is developing The Zora Project. \n\n\n\nAnya Andrews \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAnya Isabel Andrews is a migratory interdisciplinary educator\, artist\, emerging writer\, and resurfacing dancer studying Afro-diasporic movement traditions with roots in the Caribbean. Raised in the African American theater tradition\, her pedagogy and artistic practice center the transformative power of storytelling and meaning-making through movement\, dialogue\, and handcrafted adornments designed for performance. She continues to explore the application of her thesis\, Lessons at the Kitchen Table\, which investigates how spaces shape learning–how food\, conversation\, and everyday rituals become sites of knowledge. From teaching social justice–based mathematics to gathering folk at the kitchen table\, Anya’s expansive storycraft practice is rooted in community\, spiritual connection\, and tending the gardens of our collective imagination. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP Here
