DESCRIPTION:A Silent Pause is an immersive movement piece\, a choreopoem\, sister to Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow is Enuf\, an inspiration to writer Nyesha L. McCormick. SUMMARY:Juneteenth Food Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join Weeksville Heritage Center and Jummy’s Picks by Black-Owned Brooklyn for our second annual Juneteenth Food Festival on June 17 and 18\, from 12-7 pm. \n\n\n\nOn June 19\, 1865\, enslaved Black Texans were finally informed they were free\, two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. This day would come to be commemorated as Emancipation Day\, also known as Juneteenth. \n\n\n\nHistorically\, celebrations were many — ceremonial readings\, church services\, and parades took place far and wide. Of course\, food has been a huge part of these celebrations since the holiday was first observed in 1866 and we aim to keep this tradition alive\, from Texas to Brooklyn! \n\n\n\nThis year’s festival will feature 29 Black food businesses offering African American fare traditional to the holiday\, such as barbecue\, fried fish\, crab boil\, red beans and rice\, red drinks and red velvet cake; as well as flavors from regions of Africa and the Caribbean. The event will also feature a small marketplace of apparel\, accessories\, records and books\, all from Black brands. \n\n\n\nA centerpiece of this year’s festival will be Sunday’s (6/18) skywriting demonstration\, in collaboration with artist Sandy Williams\, which will lay out the original boundaries of the historic Weeksville community and conversations about the legacy of Black freedom in America. Attendees will also be treated to cultural performances\, including live sets from DJ Monday Blue\, Donwill and DJ Tara (6/17)\, as well as the Soul Summit DJ collective (6/18). There will also be hands-on art-making activities\, resources from community organizations\, and so much more! Inspired by the founding of Weeksville\, gather with us as we honor the legacy of Black liberation in Brooklyn and beyond. \n\n\n\nGET YOUR TICKET \n\n\n\nAbout the Keeping: \n\n\n\nThe Keeping is a processional performance created for an ensemble of seven performers and six musicians. The multi-site specific procession is composed of live music\, dance\, storytelling\, and poetry that explore the legacy of sovereignty\, autonomy for Black communities who established freedom towns and spiritual communities from the 1800’s until now. \n\n\n\nThe Keeping activates the entire Weeksville campus and four blocks bordering the center. While the overall project and the procession are informed by Weeksville’s archive and legacy\, The Keeping is not a historical reenactment or traditional interpretation of the work as a walking tour. DESCRIPTION:Groove on the Green: Cultivating Liberation in Urban Green Spaces brings communities together through greenspace in urban lands and celebrates how land and liberation are intertwined. \n\n\n\nHeld on the date of NYC Pride\, this event centers queer\, transgender\, and gender non-conforming farmers\, urban gardeners\, and land stewards––especially those who are Black\, Indigenous\, and Brown. SUMMARY:Juneteenth Food Festival
DESCRIPTION:Food has been a part of Juneteenth since the holiday was first observed on June 19\, 1866 — one year after Union Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced the emancipation of Black people in Texas\, one of the last groups of enslaved people in the U.S. to be freed. Black Texans gathered to celebrate a year of freedom with music and food\, over time creating annual Juneteenth traditions including red foods (strawberry soda\, red beans and rice\, red velvet cake\, watermelon) and barbecue. \n\n\n\nWith Juneteenth now recognized as a federal holiday\, our Juneteenth Food Festival on June 18-19 honors the past while creating new traditions in our present.  \n\n\n\nProduced by Weeksville Heritage Center and Jummy’s Picks by Black-Owned Brooklyn\, this event was designed to reflect the breadth of Black Brooklyn\, with 20 Black food vendors offering cuisine from across the African Diaspora\, including regions of the United States\, Africa\, the Caribbean and Latin America. \n\n\n\nThe festival will take place on the grounds of Weeksville Heritage Center\, a historic site in the African-American fight for freedom as one of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America and home to many abolitionist leaders. SUMMARY:Pinkster Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated over several days\, Pinkster was an early 17th century festival that represented an important opportunity for enslaved Africans to gather outside of laboring and the festival continues to be honored as an embodiment of New York’s enslaved peoples to build community amongst themselves and resist bondage. \n\n\n\nOriginally a celebration of Pentecost\, Dutch settlers brought the observation of the holiday to New York during their early 17th century colonization of the land and peoples. While enslaved Africans and African Americans had limited opportunities for respite\, Pinkster became one of the few instances where they were able to openly rest and practice their varied cultures among themselves. \n\n\n\nGenerations of Africans and people of African descent incorporated their traditions from music and food to dance and religious rituals\, completely transforming the holiday and maintaining their ancestral traditions. \n\n\n\nWe are excited to partner with Chief Baba Neil Clarke to bring the festival of Pinkster to Weeksville\, with opportunities to learn more about the history of Black foodways\, folkways\, and music histories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details \n\n\n\n\n\nWeeksville Heritage Center158 Buffalo AvenueBrooklyn\, NY 11213 (map)

DESCRIPTION:FREE + VIRTUAL\n\n\n\nSomething Like Freedom: Reading Group\, organized in collaboration with Wendy’s Subway\, is an intimate\, virtual reading group where participants will build a personal and collective understanding of abolition & liberation. Participants will view and discuss short excerpts of critical texts – ranging across books\, music\, film and other media – selected by the facilitator(s).  \n\n\n\nThough some materials may be provided in advance\, this reading group does not require any prior preparation or background knowledge on any topics.  \n\n\n\nEach session is a standalone session with different topics and materials; participants can register for one or multiple sessions.  \n\n\n\nThis reading group is facilitated by Mayra A. She is passionate about (re)connecting with the Black radical past as an avenue for police and prison abolition in the present. Jadyn holds a B.A. in Social and Cultural Analysis and English and American Literature from New York University\, where wrote the thesis “Abolition Is…: Theoretical Origins and Departures of Prison Abolitionism and the Modern Prison Abolition Movement in the United States.” This project led to the creation of multimedia platform “Abolition Is…”\, a political education resource which is dedicated to amplifying the tools to make the violences of prisons\, policing\, and surveillance obsolete. \n\n\n\ntroizel is black and alive and the queerness of this fact means much more than even these words can express. troizel is a PhD candidate in performance studies at nyu\, currently writing a dissertation entitled black performance studies: queer/trans experiments. \n\n\n\nNicole Shawan Junior (Smith College BA | Pace University MST | Temple University JD) was born and bred in the bass-heavy beat and scratch of Brooklyn\, where the cool of inner-city life barely survived crack cocaine’s burn. They are a Black\, queer\, poverty born\, and femme-boiyant counter-storyteller\, and femme-inist. Nicole is the Founder & Executive Director of Roots. Wounds. Words.\, a literary arts revolution that provides pedagogy\, performance and publication opportunities to BIPOC storytellers. They are also the Deputy Director of PEN America’s Prison and Justice Writing\, a program that amplifies and supports the narratives of writers who happen to be incarcerated. Nicole’s writing is anthologized in The Sentences That Create Us: Crafting A Writer’s Life in Prison (Haymarket 2022) and Emerge: A Lambda Literary Anthology (Lambda Literary 2020)\, and appears in numerous platforms. Nicole not only works to destigmatize and remove the shame from what it is to be a felon\, but they also put pen-to-paper to capture the journeys of around-the-block Black girls. \n\n\n\nMayra A. Rodríguez Castro is a writer and translator. She is the editor of ‘Dream of Europe: selected seminars and interviews: 1984-1992’ (Kenning Editions\, 2020); a selection of lectures by Audre Lorde held across Western Europe. Rodríguez is a former Postdoctoral Research Fellow at The John F. Kennedy Institute of Northamerican Studies (Freie Universität Berlin\, 2018). DESCRIPTION:WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF A CAREER FAIR WAS MORE LIKE A BLOCK PARTY?  \n\n\n\nRather than a serious event with subtle and overt inequities built in\, artist Ayana Evans imagines a space where fantasy and fun reign over traditional standards of “professionalism.” This vision comes to life with this completely free\, non-traditional career fair. \n\n\n\nOpen to all\, but designed to serve Black\, Brown\, Indigenous\, queer and trans folks – and those who have been formerly incarcerated\, have court-involvement histories\, or have otherwise been system-affected. \n\n\n\nTo foster a welcoming space that works against hierarchies\, stigmas\, and white supremacist standards of professionalism\, no one at the fair will wear suits; instead\, participants will be dressed in casual\, colorful clothes and we encourage job-seekers and other attendees to do the same. \n\n\n\nIn an effort to further support those who are often left out of the conversation around career advancement and to demystify building a career in arts and tech\, the C.R.E.A.M. One place to begin research is with NYC’s Fair Chance Act\, which makes it illegal for most employers in New York City to ask about the criminal record of job applicants before making a job offer. Ads\, applications\, and interview questions cannot include inquiries into or comments on an applicant’s criminal record. However\, there is much more to be done. DESCRIPTION:People have long used portraits to communicate ideas about identity and power. Today\, there is a growing sense of the limits and possibility of a portrait to capture the nuance & fullness of a person. Circulated images can raise the profile of an individual\, capture the pulse of the moment\, yet can also broadcast unhelpful and unexamined narratives.⁣ \n\n\n\nBEYOND THE FLAT\, a live\, outdoor performance by Zachary Fabri\, is based on a portrait by artist Samantha Box (above). Over the course of her career\, she has been a Brooklyn Borough President Appointee\, a member of District 14’s Diversity Task Force\, a founding member of The Education Councils Consortium.  In 2015 she became a Coordinator in the Office Of Community and Parent Outreach for the United Federation of Teachers. She has served as the Chairwoman of the Education and Youth Sub-committee of Community Board 1\, Board Member of NYCKidsPac\, and proud member of the NAACP. She recently became the UFT’s  Brooklyn Community & Parent Outreach Liaison and looks forward to her future endeavors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn and raised in Brooklyn\, Julie Dent is a dedicated educator and a community activist who works tirelessly to improve Early Learn Center’s schools and strengthen communities near and far.  Throughout her life she has always developed educational experiences that address the cognitive\, social\, emotional\, and physical needs of all children.   \n\n\n\nShe served as the Executive Site Director of the LIFE\, Audrey Johnson Learning Center for many years where she successfully secured grants\, organized volunteers\, and partnered with technology-related organizations to obtain computers for the Center’s children.  \n\n\n\nShe is a determined activist and volunteer who has relentlessly worked to protect and provide for the health care needs of young people and has received numerous awards and honors for her service to the children and families of New York.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Moro Salifu is a tenured Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Downstate Health Sciences University (Downstate)\, Brooklyn. In this capacity\, he oversees very large clinical\, medical education and research programs for the department of medicine at Downstate. He is also the Edwin C. and Anne K. Weiskopf Endowed Chair in Kidney Diseases and Hypertension. For his exemplary contributions in science and in leadership\, Dr. Salifu was recognized as Master of the American College of Physicians (ACP) in 2018 in its Annual Convocation ceremony in New Orleans. \n\n\n\nHe also serves as the Director of the Brooklyn Health Disparities Center (BHDC). The Brooklyn health Disparities Center was established in 2004 as a partnership between SUNY Downstate\, the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health and the Brooklyn Borough President’s office. Its mission is to eliminate health disparities in Brooklyn\, through community engagement\, health education\, health promotion\, and research to find solutions.

Rapid tests\, PCR tests\, Pfizer\, and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots are all available directly across from our 158 Buffalo Avenue entrance. \n\n\n\nNo health insurance or any other documentation is necessary.
