SUMMARY:Weeksville Watchnight: WILMINGTON 10 - U.S.A. 10\,000
DESCRIPTION:In 1972\, The Wilmington 10 – 9 Black men and one white woman social worker – were unjustly incarcerated – with combined sentences of 282 years – for a crime in racially and politically volatile Wilmington\, NC\, that they didn’t commit. \n\n\n\nSo obvious was this misjustice\, The Wilimington 10 became a cause célèbre\, as journalists and lawyers exposed criminal wrongdoing in the State’s case; religious leaders\, politicians\, and activists demanded their release and exoneration; and the Soviet Union brandished their photos as a symbol of American hypocrisy and racism. \n\n\n\nThis rarely seen or shown 1979 documentary\, restored in 2021 by the Academy Film Archive\, uses their case\, and American history – including the Wilmington Massacre of 1898 – to show how their imprisonment affected their families and extended community. It is groundbreaking in its approach and execution. \n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with The Luminal Theatre and Alfreda’s Cinema\, this screening also pays tribute to the recently deceased Assata Shakur\, who is interviewed in the film just before her escape from prison. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening\, there will be a panel discussion on social and restorative justice\, featuring key community stakeholders. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6:00 PM; the film begins promptly at 6:30 PM. \n\n\n\nMeet the Panelist \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nVincent M. Southerland is Faculty Director for New York University’s Center on Race\, Inequality\, and the Law\, for which he also served as inaugural Executive Director in February 2017. He is also an Associate Professor of law and director of the Criminal Defense and Re-entry Clinic at NYU Law. Southerland has dedicated his career to advancing racial justice and civil rights. He previously served as an Assistant Federal Public Defender with the Federal Defenders for the Southern District of New York Prior to that\, Southerland spent seven years at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund\, Inc. (LDF)\, where he was a Senior Counsel; while at LDF\, he engaged in litigation and advocacy at the intersection of race and criminal justice\, including the successful representation of people sentenced to death across the American South and children sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. Southerland holds an LLM from Georgetown University Law Center\, received his JD from Temple University School of Law\, and his BA from the University of Connecticut. He serves on the boards of The Bail Project\, the Federal Defenders of New York\, and the Center for Constitutional Rights. Alfreda’s Cinema is rooted in the belief that Black and brown stories deserve space\, care\, and visibility. They create space for films that center the lived experiences\, aesthetics\, and imaginations of Black and non-Black people of color. Their screenings champion historically silenced filmmakers and connect their work to local audiences through community-centered screenings that reflect the beauty\, nuance\, and complexity of our histories\, cultures\, and truths. By anchoring their work in a historically Black neighborhood\, Alfreda’s bridges cinema and community\, offering film as a site of reflection\, resistance\, and joy. \n\n\n\nModerator \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJessica Lynne is a writer\, editor\, and art critic. She is a founding editor of ARTS.BLACK\, an online journal of art criticism from Black perspectives. Her writing has been featured in publications such as Artforum\, Frieze\, The Los Angeles Times\, The Nation\, and Oxford American. She is a recipient of a 2025 Rabkin Prize\, which celebrates the creative and intellectual contributions of visual arts writers. Jessica holds an MFA in Writing from Sarah Lawrence College and was the host of the limited series podcast\, Harlem is Everywhere. This is a seated space\, and you are welcome to bring blankets or pillows if you would like to get comfortable.  \n\n\n\nTea and refreshments will be served between 6 and 7 pm\, with the listening session beginning at 7.  \n\n\n\nLovie (summer school radio) – broadcasting from The Lot Radio\, summer school radio started as a pandemic project for Lovie. now nearly five years old\, the show boasts a community of listeners that tune in weekly to hear her discoveries\, for a sonic range that spans ambient\, spoken word\, spiritual jazz\, soul\, alternative R&B\, and more.  \n\n\n\nin 2024\, summer school radio expanded to in person deep listening sessions at Weeksville Heritage Center in Crown Heights\, Brooklyn. the performance space at Weeksville becomes an experiential room for sound\, with Lovie’s curation joined alongside guests such as Alex Rita (Calm Roots)\, muva of Earth\, and Laraaji.  \n\n\n\nSurya Botofasina — Botofasina’s upbringing at the Sai Anantam Ashram in the Southern Californian hills involved daily bhajans (traditional Hindu devotional songs) led by legendary jazz harpist and pianist Alice Coltrane. Her musical and religious teachings continue to have a profound effect on the keyboardist\, whose career has since gone on to include a diverse range of musical collaborations with the likes of André 3000\, Carlos Niño\, Amel Larrieux\, N’Dea Davenport\, and Georgia Anne Muldrow. His work as the Music Director of the Sai Anantam Ashram Singers has seen him tour internationally honouring Swamini Turiyasangitananda Alice Coltrane’s devotional music. “The way I play the piano is not the way my friends play the piano” he says. “It forced me to find the place I truly dwell in – the place between the hip hop and jazz\, but based in meditative and long form expressions of my spirit.” \n\n\n\n\nRSVP HERE

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we watch the iconic 1971 documentary capturing a landmark Pan-African concert in Ghana celebrating the country’s independence\, featuring legendary performances by Ike & Tina Turner\, Roberta Flack\, and more. \n\n\n\nThis screening is presented in connection with POW Fest (Pan-Afro Wisdom Fest)\, a Brooklyn-based celebration presented by the Divine Times Collective that centers healing\, culture\, and community across the African diaspora. \n\n\n\nSoul to Soul was chosen because its spirit of Pan-African connection\, artistic exchange\, and collective joy directly inspired the vision for POW Fest. Just as the concert in Ghana became a bridge across continents\, POW Fest seeks to build bridges across our diasporic communities here in Brooklyn and beyond. \n\n\n\nFollowing the film\, join us for a dialogue with therapists and social workers on healing\, identity\, and the diaspora. \n\n\n\nPanelist Bios \n\n\n\nDiamond Jones- MSW is a Brooklyn-based therapist and experience artist who created Only Humans Department\, an interactive game series designed to deepen people’s relationships with their emotions through play and vulnerability. She blends therapeutic care with sensory-rich design to create spaces that are honest\, human\, and beautifully felt. \n\n\n\nRooted in the belief that emotions deserve softness and design\, Diamond’s approach invites people to move beyond survival and into deeper self-awareness\, joy\, and intimacy. Only Humans Department helps dismantle mental health stigma in Black communities by fostering liberation through the audacity of feeling deeply. \n\n\n\nCoumbah- is a multidisciplinary artist who uses sociology as a foundation to disrupt traditional approaches to curation\, centering community care and mutual aid. Their work is deeply rooted in the search for and creation of alternative third spaces—sites of refuge\, resistance\, and collective sustenance. Drawing from an academic background\, Coumbah responds to the demands of survival and creation for artists\, engaging in a praxis that navigates the tensions of identity\, belonging\, and artistic expression. As a Black femme West African artist often feeling unmoored within the diaspora\, they are in constant negotiation with what it means to hold space for themselves and others. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRSVP HERE

She is the co-host and producer of Bag Ladiez\, a podcast all about baggage: yours\, mine and ours. She has worked on many podcast series such as Natal\, In Those Genes\, and VS podcast. She created Ombie Productions\, a creative production house that focuses on visuals\, audio\, and experiences. Ombie Productions uses elements of horror and experimental art to tell stories and explain theories that focus on Afro-futurism\, science fiction\, and feminism.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaila AnnMarie Stevens (Family Portraits) \n\n\n\nLaila Annmarie Stevens (b. 2001) is a Black Queer photographer and visual artist from South Jamaica\, Queens\, now based in Brooklyn. Her work reimagines kinship structures through community and queer youth-centered storytelling. By age 20\, she was a frequent contributor to The New York Times and has since published in The Nation\, The Guardian US\, Cultured Magazine\, and more. A 2025–26 Curve Foundation Fellow and 2023–24 Magnum Foundation NYC Fellow\, Stevens’ work has been exhibited internationally\, most notably in the Museum of the City of New York’s New York Now: Home. In 2024\, The Guardian recognized her BPWS assignment as one of its Best Photos. \n\n\n\nAbout Black Storytelling Week \n\n\n\nStarted in 2023\, Black Storytelling Week is a new annual holiday calling on Black families worldwide – whether adopted\, biological\, or chosen – to devote the second week of September each year to sharing their family history with one another. It is organized by Martina Abrahams Ilunga. DESCRIPTION:The Weeksville Heritage Center\, in partnership with the Bronx Arts Ensemble\, proudly presents an evening dedicated to celebrating and exploring the voices of contemporary African Diasporic composers who are reshaping the classical chamber music landscape. Featuring works by boundary-pushing artists such as Jessie Montgomery (“Strum”)\, Daniel Bernard Roumain (“String Quartet No. 5 ‘Parks’”)\, Shelley Washington (“MIDDLEGROUND”)\, and Rhiannon Giddens (“At the Purchaser’s Option with Variations\,” arranged by Jacob Garchik)\, this program highlights how their compositions honor African diasporic heritage while being embraced within a traditionally Eurocentric field. \n\n\n\nFollowing the performance\, Weeksville’s President & CEO\, Dr. Raymond Codrington\, will moderate a dynamic panel discussion featuring leading experts\, including the esteemed Dr. Fredara Hadley of The Juilliard School. She is a founding member of the Rock\, Gospel\, R&B Afrofuturistic group Labelle\, responsible for the No.1 hit ‘Lady Marmalade’ (“Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi C’est Soir?”)\, and she currently holds the post of Ambassador for Artistry in Music for Berklee College/Boston Conservatory. Her audio-visual productions\, inspired by Afrofuturism\, have been presented by The Metropolitan Museum\, Mass MOCA\, MOMA\, Park Avenue Armory\, Moog Fest\, Miami Basel\, London’s Serpentine Gallery\, and Somerset House. Her groundbreaking project\, The Dream Machine Experience\, a music-driven Mixed Reality installation combining AI\, AR\, and VR applications\, was presented at Lincoln Center\, NY\, in the Summer of 2024. Nona is passionate about Music\, Visual Art\, and Technology and continues to be a prolific artist. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJacqueline Coston\n\n\n\nJacqueline Coston is a violinist\, music educator\, composer\, and arts administrator based in Brooklyn\, NY. A proud descendant of Bedford-Stuyvesant natives and raised in Hempstead\, Long Island\, Jacqueline began studying piano and violin in childhood and has remained deeply connected to music ever since. \n\n\n\nShe has performed with the Harlem Symphony Orchestra\, Litha Symphony Orchestra\, Protestra\, and the New Conductors Orchestra\, appearing at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall and the Apollo Theater. Jacqueline holds both a BS and MA in Music Education\, with a concentration in string performance\, from Hofstra University\, where she specialized in urban multicultural education. \n\n\n\nDriven by a commitment to equity in classical music\, Jacqueline developed a multicultural string curriculum that addresses the erasure of composers of color in traditional music education. In 2019\, she founded the Youth Orchestra of Urban Towns and Hoods (Y.O.U.T.H.)\, offering group violin instruction and general music workshops throughout New York City and New Jersey\, centering composers of color and their contributions to the classical canon. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, Jacqueline works as a freelance performer and composer\, exploring the intersection of sound\, healing\, and storytelling. Her practice includes intuitive improvisation\, sound frequency healing\, and film scoring—an evolving journey through which she continues to expand the role of music in community and personal transformation. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaFrae Sci\n\n\n\nLaFrae Sci is an imaginationist\, educator\, composer\, and sound scientist (physics) with a career spanning 30 years and 40 countries. Her creative process embraces percussion\, DIY\, modular and hardware synths. As a composer\, she writes for theater\, film\, and large and extended jazz and classical orchestras. Bedrock to her artistry is the roots and the fruits of the blues from spirituals to Afro-diasporic futuristic soundscapes that explore time travel\, prayer\, meditation\, and the African American ecstatic tradition. Perhaps her proudest achievement yet\, Frae-Frae was appointed executive director of williemaerockcamp.org in 2020. She has spearheaded the organization’s expansion to a full suite of year-round\, STEM-informed programming – currently serving over 600 girls in NYC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEXI LESTER-WILLIAMS\n\n\n\nLEXI LESTER-WILLIAMS (Viola) is a passionate music educator\, violist\, and violinist. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and currently holds a residency at a thriving high school string ensemble program called the Inner City Youth Orchestra of New York. As a violist\, Lexi has performed with the Staten Island Philharmonic and brings her performance experience into the classroom to inspire the next generation of musicians. She has appeared onstage in productions such as Into the Woods and Gianni Schicchi\, where her love for storytelling and music is combined. Lexi is committed to making music accessible\, meaningful\, and empowering for all students\, both onstage and off. This production reflects her dedication to arts education and collaboration. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Orji\n\n\n\nMary Orji is a multifaceted artist: a visionary tenor saxophonist\, composer\, and poet. Her music is a unique blend of spiritual jazz\, hip-hop\, and neo-soul\, reflecting her Christian faith and Nigerian heritage. She leads The Mary Orji Visionaries Collective\, creating immersive and soul-stirring musical experiences.  \n\n\n\nMary Orji’s work is deeply rooted in her spiritual beliefs and cultural background\, drawing inspiration from artists like Alice Coltrane and Grover Washington Jr. Her music is described as a powerful expression of faith and identity\, incorporating poetry\, rhythm\, and improvisational freedom. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNia-Simone\n\n\n\nNia-Simone is a Composer and Cellist who graduated from Berklee College of Music in May 2023. She’s passionate about enhancing storytelling and creating immersive experiences through composition. Nia-Simone was recognized by the Berklee College of Music with the Women in Game Audio Award and the Berklee Thrive Scholarship\, and recognized by the Game Audio Diversity Alliance as a GSC award recipient. She has collaborated with prestigious institutions such as MIT\, MassArt\, USC\, and Harvard. Most recently\, Nia-Simone was a guest panelist at the Lincoln Center AI in Creativity Conversation and appeared on the Lincoln Center Artclass Podcast. She was featured in the Emerging Sounds Los Angeles Composer Debut and performed as a cellist alongside Nona Hendryx for the event “In Love and Struggle.” Nia-Simone is also the composer for the short film Mmanwu and served as the assistant project manager for The Dream Machine Experience. Additionally\, she is the composer and arranger for the Black Visionaries: Weeksville Then and Now AR Mural\, and Collaboration & Education Track Chair for AWE 2025 XR conference \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNoshi Norris \n\n\n\nNoshi Norris is a classically trained violinist-violist from Brooklyn currently studying film scoring at Berklee College of Music. Noshi blends his classical knowledge with hip hop and jazz influences to create a unique sound. He is currently part of a string/beatbox group performing across Boston. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShelley Nicole \n\n\n\nShelley Nicole is a transformational healer using the power of love and the energetic magic of music to shift the world. She is a songwriter\, vocalist\, composer\, actor and founder of Shelley Nicole’s blaKbüshe. Shelley Nicole has released three albums; her latest\, I Am American\, produced by Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid. Shelley Nicole has graced stages including Lincoln Center\, Carnegie Hall\, and The Apollo Theater. She is a 2024 recipient of the NYFA Women’s Fund Grant and a Watermill Center Fellowship for her “Tao of Abbey Lincoln” project and is also a co-collaborator on Nia O. Witherspoon’s “Priestess of Twerk: A Black Femme Star Temple + Wisdom School.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack Cline \n\n\n\nJack Cline (they/he) is a New York-based pianist\, music director\, and professional sweetie. He has recently returned to the city\, after working as a staff pianist at Boston University and the Boston Conservatory at Berklee\, and music directing regional and educational productions across Greater Boston. A classically-trained pianist\, Jack is a versatile artist fluent in the worlds of jazz\, funk\, pop\, rock\, and musical theatre. He is also a gifted improviser\, taking after the long-form works of Keith Jarrett. Their work is interested in the liberatory potential of music on a personal and collective level\, and the nurturing of loving relationships through music.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging and deeply personal journey through history with Nicka Sewell Smith\, nationally recognized genealogist and storyteller\, as she leads a series of virtual African American genealogy workshops. This unique series will guide participants through the process of researching their family histories\, with a special emphasis on centering Black voices\, narratives\, and ancestral legacies. \n\n\n\nThrough the lens of genealogy\, participants will learn to navigate historical records\, oral traditions\, and modern tools like DNA testing. As Nicka beautifully demonstrates\, genealogical research combined with oral histories helps us develop a deep understanding of our past\, present\, and can help us navigate our future. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re just beginning or continuing your journey\, this series offers the inspiration and knowledge to dig deeper into your roots—and strengthen the stories that shape us all. \n\n\n\nPresented by Weeksville and in collaboration with Robyne Walker Murphy\, an arts and cultural strategist and family researcher committed to uplifting Black heritage\, these workshops promise to be both educational and empowering. \n\n\n\nAll workshops are free and will take place on Zoom. You must register for each workshop individually. \n\n\n\nSESSION SCHEDULE (7pm EST on Zoom): \n\n\n\nWednesday\, July 23rd: Introduction to DNA and Genealogy \n\n\n\nGenetic genealogy truly bears fruit if multiple family members on multiple lines of the family have tested. Learn the ins and outs of the type of tests\, what to expect when you get results\, and how to create and manage a project for your family while being mindful of privacy and sensitive issues that may arise. \n\n\n\nFACILITATOR BIOGRAPHY: \n\n\n\nNicka Smith is a host\, consultant\, and documentarian with more than 20 years of experience as a genealogist. She has extensive experience in researching the enslaved and their communities and is a valued expert in genealogy research along the Mississippi Delta. \n\n\n\nNicka has diverse and varied experience in media with a background in audio\, video\, and written communications. She’s appeared on TODAY Show\, CNN\, MSNBC\, was featured on an Emmy winning episode of the series Who Do You Think You Are\, and has been interviewed by Oakland Tribune\, The Undefeated\, National Geographic\, and TIME. She is the host of BlackProGen LIVE\, an innovative web show with more than 130 episodes focused on people of color genealogy and family history. \n\n\n\nShe is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma\, a member of two lineage societies (Sons and Daughters of the Middle Passage (SDUSMP) and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR))\, and a past board member of the California Genealogical Society (CGS) and the African American Genealogical Society of Northern California (AAGSNC). Nicka served as the chair of the Outreach and Education Committee for AAGSNC\, and she is the former project manager for the Alameda County\, CA Youth Ancestral Project where more than 325 youth were taught the value of family history. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, Nicka is the family historian and lead researcher for the Atlas family of Lake Providence\, East Carroll\, Louisiana\, and guides and coaches an active group of family historians at the Who is Nicka Smith Patreon community.
